Energy Management
Conserving energy is one of our highest priorities. The focus is on producing plant species that grow well in our unique coastal climate. The greenhouses are designed to minimize space requirements, maximize the use of natural light and minimize energy use.
The entire facility is equipped with a weather station computer and greenhouse climate control system that monitors temperatures inside and outside the greenhouses so that optimal greenhouse temperatures are kept using the minimum amount of energy. This is aided by automatic venting which also increases inside air circulation which lowers energy requirements.
We use highly efficient low emission natural gas fired boilers to heat the greenhouses. In addition, most greenhouses are equipped with highly efficient hot water heating systems that reduce energy costs by re-circulating the hot water back into the greenhouse. All greenhouses are equipped with energy curtains that trap heat thereby reducing temperature loss. This reduces heating costs by between 25-50% depending on the crop.
The CO2 which is produced as a heating by-product is re-cycled back into the greenhouses. This optimizes the growing environment, shortening growing periods which further reduces energy requirements.
All refrigerators are equipped with state of the art fan motors and a monitoring system that reduces electrical costs by over 50%.
