Amaryllis trumpet shaped flowers deliver weeks of spectacular blooms during cold winter months. First discovered in Chile and brought to Europe during the 1820s, they now enjoy worldwide popularity as a festive winter bloom.
Water: Keep planting mix moist at all times. Light: Full light until flowers appear. Plant will grow toward light. Rotate container often to produce a straight stem. Once a flower has opened, indirect sunlight will promote longer flower life Continuing care: Cut off flower stalk and continue to water, keeping plant in a sunny location. When night temperatures are above 35°F place outside in pot or plant in the garden. Fertilize every two weeks after flowering with a 5-10-5 fertilizer. In early August stop watering and fertilizing and allow the bulb to dry out (pull from ground if planted in garden). Bulb can also be left in garden in mild climates and will bloom naturally in late spring. Place in a cool location at 55°F for 10 weeks (garage or cool closet). Replant with new planting mix, move to warm location 65–75°F and resume watering to begin the blooming cycle. Temperature: Warm room temperatures, 65–75°F in flowering growth process, once flower has opened cooler temperatures will prolong flower life. Fertilizer: Liquid fertilizer at half rate next spring growing period. USDA Zones: 8-11
