Popular house and landscaping plants, species in the Dracaena genus come in a crazy variety of forms. Many of our customers know about our cut Lucky Bamboo, but what many may not realize is that they're related to the towering Janet Craigs and woody Massangeanas at the back of the store. It's an even more difficult leapt to realize that these plants are also related to dragon trees that grow in the arid regions of Africa and India.

Despite this, naturalists realized these disparate species were related when they founded genus in the 18th century. So when it came time to pick a name, Dracaena seemed like an apt choice since it is a romanized version of the Ancient Greek work drakina, which is the feminine form of "dragon." Several kinds of Cordylines used to be classified as Dracaenas but a deepening understanding biology eventually compelled experts to spin them off into other or new genre.

Most all of the Dracaena plants sold at BloomRite® Gardens have similar requirements. They require a minimum temperature of 60°, but prefer it to be closer to around 80°F. If indoors they need bright indirect light, but outdoors a shady place is needed to avoid burning. A location that only gets AM or PM light is acceptable as well. Most Dracaenas should be watered only when their potting medium becomes dry to the touch, at which point they should be thoroughly watered. Misting or placing the plant over open water may be a help if the humidity is low where it is growing.
