Sedum in Spring

Sedum is a widespread genus of the Crassulaceae family, and encompasses hundreds of species of leaf succulents. They are mostly perennial, blooming in autumn and producing colorful flowers with five petals. It can be found all over the northern hemisphere, and is often called stonecrop.

Sedum is famously known for being very hardy and very easy to care for. It can endure poor soil conditions, extreme temperatures, and usually prefers its soil to be on the dry side. For these reasons it is widely uses as a ground cover, in rock gardens, or even as roof cover. However, different varieties have different conditions they can tolerate; some can handle the freezing cold but may struggle in the heat, while others will thrive in warm places but will die in the cold.

The varieties pictured here are a Bloomrite® Gardens crop, and one of those that will tolerate cold to temperate climates. In fact they can even handle subfreezing temperatures for a short time. Indoors this sedum will perform best at about 65-75ºF while it gets bright light. Otherwise it is very easy to care for. Just allow the potting mix to dry out between watering. USDA zones are 2-10.

You can find 4” Tri-color Sedum at Bloomrite® Gardens for $2.95 a plant. They are sold in flats of 15 plants, and will be available through the rest of April. The terra cotta pot is complementary.
